Character Design & Concepts

Every so often, I'm randomly inspired by a story, an image, or even just a sentence I've heard, and I begin formulating ideas for a new comic. I like to put faces to my designs because I think this is the most fun part of the developmental process, which leads to me doodling characters and facial expressions for them. This helps me to get a better feel for them and is a visual reminder of certain aspects of the comic that may relate to their appearance.

Patience's Pyjamas

Patience is the main character of this comic. These are early illustrations that I drew of her in 'realistic' pyjamas. I often see characters drawn in fashionable attire at home, which I don't want to portray because I think this is unrealistc.

Multiple Version of Patience

I sketched multiple Patiences as part of an Instagram trend where artists draw their characters in different ways: as a child, as normal, as their opposite gender and as the villain of the story. I found this quite fun and inspiring, particularly the villain drawing because it provoked me to put a lot of thought into the reasons behind certain aspects of her design. For example, she has silk-pressed hair because she is insecure about her natural coils.
